A Youthful Coppi Wins Before the War
A young Fausto Coppi came to his first Giro d'Italia as part of the powerful Legnano team of Gino Bartali. An early crash on stage 3 injured Bartali. When he began to struggle on stage 5 Coppi gained permission to join a breakaway. After bridging to the break Coppi crashed and broke his bike, losing significant time on the stage.

Coppi battled steadily back until a solo breakaway on stage 11 gained the Maglia Rosa. With the help of Gino Bartali Coppi held the race leader for the remainder of the race.
At the finish in Milan Fausto Coppi gained the first Giro d'Italia victory of his career.
